EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION

Oil and Gas: Road to the Future

Since the 1970s, Shell has invested considerably in oil and gas exploration in Egypt. In recent years, the company has increasingly targeted gas exploration, in line with Egypt’s drive to develop its vast gas resources. A key success was the discovery of vast gas reserves in the Obaiyed field, in the Western desert: Obaiyed, which started production in 1999, is the largest gas project in Egypt, at a cost of around US$ 600 million.

Today, Shell operates a daily production of approximately 16,000 barrels of oil and some 320 million standard cubic feet of natural gas from the Badr El Din concession. Approximately 23,000 barrels of condensate and some 285 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF/D) of natural gas are derived from Obaiyed. The Rosetta field, in which Shell holds a 40% equity stake, came on stream in January 2001, producing around 305 MMSCF/D of natural gas per day currently (Jan,2002).

Shell In Deep Water
Northeast Mediterranean Deepwater Concession

Shell won the Northeast Mediterranean Deepwater Concession in 1998, despite fierce international competition. This unusually large concession is located to the North of the Nile Delta, at water depths of between 800 and 2800 meters. Shell has committed $150 million to a preliminary five-year exploration period, involving the drilling of five exploration wells. Two of these exploration wells were completed in 2000/2001, using the world’s largest dynamically positioned dual activity drill ship, “The West Navion”.

Shell Egypt started a three-well drilling campaign in the same concessions in October 2003 and will announce results as soon as the drilling campaign has been completed.
